It’s mid-August 2025 and Israel’s railway systemis once again paralyzed. The announcement hitearly: no trains through Tel Aviv, August 19–26.For an entire week, the North and the South arecut off, leaving commuters, families, students —and yes, nightlife workers — scrambling.
Theofficials call it “essential emergency repairwork.” The public calls it something elseentirely.
Nights in Tel Aviv WithoutTrains
Picture Dizengoff Street at midnight.Bars buzzing, clubs glowing, tourists wandering. But the strippers of Tel Aviv? They’re notsmiling. “Clients are canceling,” one performerexplains. “If I’m late, I lose the gig. If theycan’t get here, the club loses money. Either way,I lose.”
What used to be a quick 90-minute rideis now a 3-hour nightmare. Shuttle buses? Packed.Taxis? Cost more than the paycheck somenights.
Haifa Morning Meltdown
Flip thescene. Haifa station, 6:30 a.m. A crowd standsrestless. A man mutters: “I’m late again. Enoughis enough.” Beside him, a student waves his phone:“How do I explain this to my professor?”
In thecorner, a woman in heels and heavy makeup — astripper heading to Tel Aviv — shrugs: “I’ve got ashow at 10 tonight. With costumes, lights, all theextras. You want me to drag that on a bus? Nothappening.”
The Official Version vs. The StreetVersion
According to Israel Railways, the issuestems from damaged power cables. Hundreds ofmeters need replacing. Their neat chart shows howeverything will work:
Northbound lines cut atSavidor.
Southbound stop at Lod.
Jerusalemand Modiin halt at Ben Gurion Airport.
Freeshuttles run every five minutes through centralTel Aviv.
On paper? Perfect. In practice? Acircus. Parents juggle kids, workers call bosseswith excuses, and tourists stare helplessly atHebrew signs.
Down South: Heat, Dust, andAnger
Now switch to Beersheba. Evening, hotwinds. People waiting, sweating, furious. “I lefthome earlier than ever, and I still missed myshow,” says a stripper from the South. She laughsbitterly: “The taxi ride cost more than Iearned.”
Next to her, a cab driver smirks:“Business is good when the trains die.” He pocketscash, but the rest of the city burns withfrustration. |
